I’ve always loved Reese Witherspoon. Her accent in Walk the Line was adorable and spot-on, Legally Blonde gets quoted daily around here, and holds the honor of being the only 2 hours I ever really wished to be a blonde, and I love how she’s pretty but sort of unconventionally so.
But her style has been sort of, you know, boring, in the past. I have no problems with her desire to marry young and have babies and just live a quiet normal life, I think that’s wonderful and I’m thankful she’s never ruined my happy little image of her by getting drunk and flashing me. But that settled-ness has often manifested itself in her wardrobe, and she’s tended to look a bit. . .matronly.
So, very happy to see her stepping out recently in some outfits that are anything but matronly. And I don’t mean slutty (that would be the opposite of matronly), I mean colorful and classic, tailored yet unexpected, and so, so, so very Reese.

This is, of course, the famous yellow Nina Ricci she wore to the Golden Globes. I love the irreverence of a short primary-hued cocktail dress at a formal event like this, and I ADORE the red shoes with it. So classy yet youthful, not an easy combination to pull off.

Again, a basic shape, a breezy easy idea, but with a bit of polish and a bit of fun. I don’t know why, exactly, but I love this look. It’s so difficult to wear something simple and comfortable without looking like you just ran out in any old thing. Reese makes the classic blue-and-white ensemble look chic, and effortless.

This is, of course, the Oscars, and love is not a strong enough word to describe how I feel about this look. The color is gorgeous alone- rich, dark, formal, yet unexpected- and even better on her. The cut is simple yet interesting, and it fits her flawlessly. So, I don’t know, adore? Worship, treasure, venerate? Something along those lines.
I am, of course, sad that she is getting divorced, but if new singledom is what has been injecting such fun and polish into Reese’s style, well then, I can’t be entirely sorry.
